RI-0400: A finely handcrafted book of poetry and graphic art prints by Carl Silberman and Sam Moore. When Sam first showed me this book I was, frankly, stunned! It is a work of art and craft of the highest caliber. Sam is an artist who has had sold out shows in major galleries on both coasts--San Francisco, CA and Soho, NY. His work hangs in a number of private collections. He also does scrimshaw from time to time and is one of the scrims-handers that I can call on to do scrimshaw on my reel seats. Carl Silberman is a poet and Sam's friend of many years since they attended the San Francisco Art Institute together in the early 1970's. Carl does good work. What gives this project that special, finely crafted appeal is that it was taken for printing and binding to a small, local business run by some exceptionally talented printing artists called Bison Bookbinding & Letterpress. When asked how the project should be done, Sam told them that after seeing their distinctive work, he felt that it should be left in their hands to create the final design of the book. A piece of art that is the product of several hands and minds avoids the mediocrity of consensus thinking when, as in this wonderful book, Each participant is asked and challenged to do what they are best at without the inevitable compromises and probable mediocrity of "group-think." This book is truly a work of fine art by any measure. It is a treasure that you will be proud to own and display.
To see examples of Sam Moore's scrimshaw work, view the "Ziricote and Variscite" reel seats in "Reel Seats" and the "Silver Song" necklace under #2 - "Necklaces and Pendants" in "Available for Purchase." Also see the 'Double Runner" necklace in the "Fine Jewelry" gallery in "Galleries/Archives."
